This city wasn’t our primary destination, largely because the long drive had sapped our energy, and we needed to replenish our supplies. Given our limitations, we decided to keep the journey relaxed rather than pushing ourselves too hard, so we opted for a one-night stay.
The city, though not large, has an air of faded grandeur, with its aging infrastructure hinting at a once-thriving past. We explored some of the landmark buildings, which were quite charming, exuding a distinct British influence. As for whether it resembles Edinburgh, I can’t really say (I’ve never been there, and I wouldn’t want to make unfounded claims [sneaky smile]).
In areas with a significant Chinese population, there are plenty of Chinese supermarkets, which is a real treat for those who miss home or crave familiar snacks. There are also numerous Chinese restaurants, though the authenticity of the flavors can be a bit hit-or-miss (judging by domestic standards, you might find it challenging to enjoy anything [facepalm]).
We stocked up on two big bags of junk food to satisfy any late-night cravings.
Our hotel experience was, to put it mildly, unusual (and one I hope never to repeat; it left me with a serious case of the chills). The booking process seemed fine, and when we arrived, the place looked like a typical old apartment. However, once we entered the bathroom, things felt off, and it was too late to switch hotels.
The bathroom was equipped with an unusually high number of handrails, not something you’d typically see in a regular home. Initially, I thought it might be a safety measure for an elderly population, but it soon became clear that the setup resembled a rehabilitation facility. (My gut feeling is that it might have been converted from a hospital or a rehab center.
) Why didn’t they disclose this information? I felt uneasy that night and couldn’t wait to leave [crying].
The city’s roads, much like those in Hong Kong, are full of steep inclines and declines, so drivers need to be extra cautious, especially on the more challenging slopes. We indulged in some Japanese snacks and ice cream before heading out. Cultural sites like churches, while nice, don’t particularly excite me (after seeing many, they all start to blend together). I doubt I’ll return, as the old hotel and the overall vibe of the city left me feeling a bit spooked and disappointed.
