Discover Milford Sound: Essential Slow Travel Destination in New Zealand
✨After spending a few days in Queenstown, local friends couldn’t stop raving about Milford Sound. Initially, I was hesitant due to the long drive—a round trip of over ten hours, which seemed like a real test of endurance. However, the moment I stepped out of the car, I understood why they were so enthusiastic.

The scene before me was nothing short of a fairyland after the rain! It was so breathtaking that I was left speechless. I only wished I had paid more attention in my ancient poetry classes; I could have composed an ode to this enchanting place.

🌟I booked the Milford Sound Sunrise Cruise, complete with pick-up and drop-off in Queenstown, from Intercity for $194.50. The bus arrived promptly at 6:30 AM at the Athol St bus stop in Queenstown. There were several buses, and the driver carefully checked everyone’s tickets. The bus was packed with a diverse group of travelers, and I was the only Chinese person on board.

🌟Our driver and guide, a Fijian with a charming accent, provided an engaging commentary on the scenery along the way. Although my English isn’t perfect, his stories and insights made the journey even more fascinating.

🌟We made two stops to stretch our legs and explore. The first stop was Te Anau, where we all took a break to grab some coffee and rest. I also seized the opportunity to admire the serene beauty of Lake Te Anau. The second stop was at Fiordland National Park, where the post-rain blue sky reflected on the water, creating a breathtakingly beautiful scene. From the bus, I caught a glimpse of the most enormous rainbow 🌈 I’ve ever seen, a truly magical moment 😭.

🌟As we entered the canyon area, it started to rain, and countless waterfalls cascaded down the lush, green cliffs, one after another. It was like stepping into a different world, filled with awe and wonder.

🌟We arrived at the dock around 12 PM, had a quick lunch, and then boarded the Maiden of Milford Cruise, which lasted about two hours. The boat offered free coffee, adding a cozy touch to the experience.

🌟Milford Sound after the rain is a true fairyland. Standing on the deck, looking out at the misty canyons, felt surreal. The cruise began in the rain, but halfway through, the sun broke through, giving us two stunning views for the price of one. Countless waterfalls poured down, and the deep, almost black-blue seawater was mesmerizing.

Seals and sea lions (I can’t tell them apart) lounged on the rocks, basking in the sun. They lazily lifted their heads to look at us when they heard the chatter from the cruise, then dozed off again. Despite being soaked by the wind 🍃, the experience was incredibly blissful.
🌟The return journey seemed longer than the trip there, and we didn’t get back to Queenstown until around 8:00 PM. I dozed off for much of the ride, but I managed to capture the most picturesque New Zealand road scenery near Kingston. In the summer twilight, flocks of lazy sheep grazed leisurely across the hills. Even with a 10+ hour drive and a 2-hour cruise, this trip was absolutely fantastic and well worth every minute!
🫧Milford also offers a limited 3-day hiking and accommodation route, which is highly recommended (though it’s challenging to book). My Swiss friends drove there and hiked the final leg, and they described it as absolutely stunning!
Milford Sound sounds like an unforgettable experience! The combination of the dramatic drive and the stunning views must make it worth every minute. I can totally see why people get so excited about it. Slow travel really allows you to soak in these kinds of magical places!
