Discover Milford Sound Live: A Breathtaking Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience
Before planning the trip, I was instantly enchanted by the breathtaking videos of the fjords I found online. Even with just a 10-day vacation, we decided to forgo the eastern route and, embracing the spirit of “since we’re here already,” dedicated two days to exploring the majestic Milford Sound.

The journey to Milford Sound was a visual feast in itself. From Queenstown to Te Anau, the turquoise lakes, vast pastures dotted with cattle, sheep, and deer, and the distant snow-capped mountains left us in awe. The landscape was a stunning tapestry of natural beauty that seemed to unfold before our eyes.

As we neared the tunnel, the towering, snow-capped mountains loomed ahead, and playful kea (alpine parrots) perched curiously in front of our car. The misty clouds added an ethereal touch, making us feel as if we had entered a mystical, untouched world.

On the cruise, we were thrilled to get up close to the cascading waterfalls and spot seals lounging on the rocks and penguins waddling along the shore.

Although it was a bit disappointing that the day was overcast and the recent dry spell meant we missed out on the spectacle of thousands of waterfalls, we felt incredibly fortunate to have visited when we did. The next day, Highway 94 was closed due to heavy rain, which would have disrupted our plans.
