After traveling in New Zealand for over a month, if I had to pick a favorite city, Dunedin would definitely be on the list.

This city is located on the east coast of the South Island, and some self-driving tourists might even overlook it, which is such a pity! It is known as the “Edinburgh of the South,” and upon arrival, you are immediately drawn to its rich historical atmosphere. Just outside the city, there are charming natural landscapes that are quite different from the typical impression of New Zealand.

I really regretted not staying a few more days when I left!

📍Port Chalmers
A hidden corner, accessible by taking the No. 14 bus directly from the city center, and within 20 minutes, you can reach this beautiful port. The journey along the coast offers stunning views. A cathedral perched halfway up the hill adorns this peninsula, surrounded by mountains and the sea, with many steep slopes, providing a unique experience.
Don’t miss these two viewpoints:
1️⃣ Lady Thorn Dell Lookout
2️⃣ Flagstaff Lookout

📍Tūhura Otago Museum
Perhaps the best museum on the South Island (the one in Christchurch is still under repair), with very high-quality exhibits, free admission, and I visited twice! There’s never enough time to see everything, especially the fascinating displays about maritime culture.

📍Toitu Otago Settlers Museum
It has a vast collection, including many antique cars. Right next to the museum is the Chinese garden, Lan Yuan, which is a sister garden to the Yuyuan Garden in Shanghai.

📍Dunedin Railways
A very photogenic train station where you can book a round-trip train excursion for the day.

🌊There is also the highly acclaimed “Tunnel Beach,” but unfortunately, it was closed when I visited. I didn’t have time to visit “Larnach Castle” and “Sandfly Bay,” giving me another reason to return to Dunedin.
