Discover the Thrill: 21km Hiking Adventure on Mount Tongariro, New Zealand
Tongariro National Park (Tangoriro National Park): As New Zealand’s first national park and a key filming location for The Lord of the Rings, this stunning destination is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a renowned hiking paradise. The park boasts three active volcanoes 🌋, making it a truly unique and breathtaking experience.

👀 Route Introduction: This one-day adventure starts and ends at different points, offering a diverse and exciting journey. Along the way, you’ll be treated to the mesmerizing sights of waterfalls, snow-capped mountains, volcanic landscapes, and serene lakes. One of the most memorable experiences is the distinctive, pungent smell of hydrogen sulfide in the air 🫨, adding an otherworldly touch to your trek.

🚗 Itinerary: The drive from the city takes about four hours each way, totaling eight hours for the round trip. For a comfortable and safe journey, we’ve arranged a 5-seater business van, priced at 200🔪. This ensures you don’t have to rush down the mountain to catch a shuttle bus, and bookings require at least two people (a bit of a quirk, we know 😑). The trail is not as challenging as it might seem, and the spectacular views more than make up for any physical exertion.

❗️ Hiking Preparation:
– Check the weather forecast in advance and choose a clear, sunny day for your hike.
– Pack a windproof jacket and sturdy shoes (the winds at the summit can be quite fierce), a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a mask, and trekking poles (especially useful for the slippery downhill sections 🥲).

– Bring at least 1L of water per person and your own food, as there are no supplies available along the route.
– Consider bringing a pair of spare slippers (your feet will thank you after the long hike! 🦶🏻).
– There are pit toilets every 2-3 km, but they lack running water, so be sure to bring wet wipes for hygiene.

Experience Highlights 🥳:
I absolutely love the design of this hiking route, which takes you from dramatic volcanic terrains to lush alpine meadows. Most of the trail is exposed to the sun ☀️, but the final three kilometers lead you into a tranquil, shaded path that feels like a refreshing spring breeze. This part of the journey is a beautiful reward for your perseverance, a true “after the bitterness comes the sweetness” moment. Step by step, you’ll measure the world with your footsteps 🤘🏽.
