D10 (10:30) Te Anau – Milford – Te Anau
Milford Sound in New Zealand, often hailed as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” is a breathtaking relic from the Ice Age, dating back 100,000 years. This unique fjord landscape is a rare gem, and while opinions on its worth vary, I can confidently say it’s an absolute must-visit! It was, without a doubt, my favorite spot during my entire New Zealand adventure.
To make the most of our trip, we decided to stay for two nights, allowing us to take our time and fully immerse ourselves in the experience. We set off at 6:30 AM, embarking on a 1.5-hour drive to catch the earliest 9:30 Southern Discoveries cruise. The journey itself was a feast for the eyes, with vast mountain forests, deep canyons, and morning mist swirling around the peaks.
The symphony of chirping birds and the gentle flow of mountain streams made the drive an unforgettable part of the experience.
Upon arrival, we navigated to the free parking lot at Deepwater Basin Parking & Bus, then followed a 20-minute rainforest trail that was equally enchanting. The lush greenery and fresh air made the walk a delightful prelude to our cruise. We arrived at the Milford Sound Visitor Centre, where we exchanged our tickets at the Southern Discoveries counter.
Our 9:30 cruise departed right on schedule. Because we chose the early departure, the boat was nearly empty, giving us the freedom to move around and soak in the views without any crowds. The weather added a dramatic touch; a light drizzle turned into a heavy downpour as we ventured deeper into the fjord.
Hundreds of waterfalls cascaded down the cliffs, creating an otherworldly, almost apocalyptic atmosphere. Despite the cold and the rain, we stood at the bow of the ship, mesmerized by the spectacle, unwilling to retreat to the cabin.
Throughout the cruise, the captain brought us close to the wildlife, and we were fortunate enough to spot playful dolphins, lounging seals, and adorable little penguins. On the return trip, the boat sailed under a massive waterfall, drenching everyone in a thrilling and refreshing cascade. The entire 2-hour cruise was a highlight of our trip, filled with awe and wonder.
