Experience College Life: Spend a Day as a University Student👩🎓
The University of Auckland is nestled right in the heart of the city, so I found myself wandering around when I had some free time. As soon as I stepped onto the campus, a flood of memories from my study abroad days came rushing back. With a canvas bag slung over my shoulder, black-framed glasses perched on my nose, and my hair tied up in a neat bun, I would often be seen dashing to the library, clutching my laptop.
On those particularly hectic days, I’d find a quiet spot in the small garden behind the school, pull out my laptop, and settle down on the grass to work on my papers. When hunger pangs hit, I’d munch on a slice of bread, and once the edits were done, I’d rush off to my next lecture.
I always had a preference for the last row during lectures. Our tiered classroom, a converted theater, had a dramatic setup, and sitting in the last row made me feel like I was perched on a cliff. My acrophobia would kick in, and I’d have to fight the irrational fear that I might actually fall if I slipped.
During tutorials, the teacher, noticing that I was a foreign student and not very vocal, would often single me out to answer questions. This would make my hands clammy with nervousness, but it also pushed me out of my comfort zone.
When I did the math, I realized that my first year abroad was 2015—exactly 10 years ago!
It was a shocking realization!!!
I spent six years abroad, and while there were many moments of stress and tears, the beautiful memories far outweighed the challenges. Endless papers, problem sets, and exams, along with many sleepless nights, were balanced by spontaneous trips and the breathtaking scenery of Europe, which truly rejuvenated my spirit.
I formed incredible friendships that still thrive today, with annual get-togethers. The experience also shaped my bold and resilient personality, honed through spirited debates with Germans, hahaha.
