Explore Hooker Valley Track: Best Hiking Tips & Scenic Views in New Zealand
The Hooker Valley Track on Mount Cook is a must-see destination, attracting around 80% of visitors to the area. Even those who don’t complete the entire 10km round trip often venture as far as the first suspension bridge. The hike typically takes about 3 hours, and we found ourselves right on schedule, snapping photos along the way.
The trail is adorned with three picturesque suspension bridges (Photos 1, 15, 16, 18), and the scenery is simply breathtaking. In fact, I found the views along the path even more captivating than the final destination, Hooker Lake [laughing and crying]. After crossing the third suspension bridge and walking for another ten minutes, you’ll finally reach Hooker Lake at the foot of Mount Cook (Photos 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7).
In winter, the lake freezes, and the more adventurous hikers might even walk on the ice. We visited in early summer, and there were still patches of ice floating on the water. Personally, I found Hooker Lake less enchanting compared to Tasman Glacier Lake; its color was a bit murky, yellowish, and even a tad dirty.
It might have been due to the overcast weather, which didn’t do justice to its beauty [cute face].
The Hooker Valley Track is relatively flat, making it an ideal choice for beginners. There’s also a public restroom near the third suspension bridge, which is a welcome convenience.
It’s important to note that the track is mostly covered with small stones, which can be tough on your shoes. Wearing a pair of sturdy and comfortable hiking shoes is essential. Additionally, the weather in Mount Cook can be unpredictable, and strong winds, heavy rain, or snow can lead to the closure of the suspension bridges. We hiked the track on October 25th, but it was closed the next day due to heavy snow, and it seemed to remain partially closed on the 27th as well.
On our way to the lake, we took our time, savoring the stunning views and taking plenty of photos, which took us over two hours. On the return, we picked up the pace and managed to get back in under 50 minutes. From a distance, we could see the tiny Hermitage Hotel where we stayed (Photo 18) [cute face].
For those driving, you can easily navigate to the Hooker Valley Track parking lot, and parking is free.
