Explore Mt Cook: Activate Vacation Mode with a Non-Self-Driving Work Pause
Accommodation:
Mount Cook offers a limited selection of lodging options, making it essential to book in advance. Initially, I secured a spot at the Haka House hostel, but later managed to find an opening for one night at the Hermitage Hotel and its affiliated Mt Cook Lodge and Motel. The cost for two nights was roughly the same, and a convenient shuttle bus connects these accommodations.

If possible, opt for the Hermitage Hotel, as it provides all-inclusive dining and serves as the pick-up and drop-off point for the Intercity bus, making your stay more seamless.

Activities:
1. Hooker Valley Track: We arrived on the first day around 2 PM, quickly settled into our hotel, and set off on the trail by 3 PM. The round trip took approximately 4 hours. It’s advisable to start earlier to avoid returning in the dark. The hotel is about 2.5 kilometers from the trailhead, and the path is lined with gravel and often windy, so a windbreaker is highly recommended.

The scenery is breathtaking, and the lighting is particularly stunning in the morning.
2. Tasman Glacier Boat Tour: The starting point for the Tasman Glacier hike is 8 kilometers away. Without a car, we decided against the hike and instead booked a boat tour through the hotel, which cost 195 RMB per person.

Unfortunately, the tour was canceled due to rain the next day, highlighting how weather-dependent activities are in Mount Cook. However, the unexpected free day provided a relaxing opportunity to enjoy the hotel’s amenities.

Dining:
Most of our meals were enjoyed at the hotel (see photos 8-13). The dinner buffet, priced at 83 RMB per person, offers a variety of dishes, and there’s also a cozy cafe serving sandwiches, cakes, and pizzas from 10 AM to 4 PM. The food quality is excellent, and given the limited dining options in Mount Cook, the hotel’s offerings are a delightful and convenient choice.
