Explore New Zealand’s Mount Cook: Complete Two Scenic Hiking Routes in One Day
A Day Trip to Lake Pukaki and Mount Cook

In the morning, savor some fresh salmon by the serene shores of Lake Pukaki. In the afternoon, embark on an adventurous hike in the majestic Mount Cook, where you can complete two stunning New Zealand hiking routes in a single day.

**Route 1: Tasman Lake**
🚗 Drive to Tasman Glacier Park
⏰ Start at 3:35 PM
Though the round trip is only about 40 minutes, we lingered by the lake, making it a nearly two-hour experience.
You’ll encounter two forks along the way; follow the signs and take the right path both times, leading you to the Tasman River and eventually to the glacier lake.

The endpoint is Tasman Lake, where you can still see glaciers that haven’t melted, creating a mesmerizing blue-tinged, milky white water. It’s a perfect spot to sit quietly and enjoy the salmon packed from Mt Cook Alpine Salmon Shop.

**Route 2: Hooker Valley Track**
After completing the Tasman route, with plenty of daylight left, we ventured on to this breathtaking trail.
🚗 Drive to Hooker Valley Track, just a 30-minute drive from Tasman
⏰ Start at 5:30 PM, with a round trip taking about three hours
I personally found this route even more enchanting than the Tasman Lake.

The journey includes crossing three suspension bridges, each offering increasingly stunning views. After the third bridge, a 10-minute walk takes you to the end. If you have the energy, make sure to reach the final destination.
Along the way, you’ll pass through streams, shrubs, and grasslands, getting up close to the snow-capped mountains.

The endpoint is Hooker Lake, and the view makes every step worthwhile. The golden light on the snow-capped peaks is truly a sight to behold.
It’s recommended to start this route around 5-6 PM, so you can head down the mountain around 8 PM. Driving west towards Twizel, you’ll also be treated to a stunning sunset and evening glow.

👚👟 Both routes are gravel paths, so be sure to wear non-slip shoes. The wind can be strong, so dress warmly and protect yourself. The terrain is not too challenging, making it suitable for most hikers.
