Mount Cook, known as “Aoraki” in Māori, which translates to “the mountain that pierces the clouds,” is the highest peak in Oceania. Aoraki also holds a significant place in Māori mythology as the name of a spirit. This majestic mountain stands tall in the Southern Alps, in the central-western part of New Zealand’s South Island.

It is surrounded by 22 other peaks, each over 3,000 meters high, and is covered in snow year-round. At an elevation of 3,754 meters, it dominates the landscape. In 1991, a landslide reduced its height by 10 meters. The mountain is flanked by the stunning Hooker Glacier and the Tasman Glacier, adding to its awe-inspiring beauty.

1. Hiking Routes (three options):
🟢 Short Route: Kea Point Track, a round trip that takes about 45 minutes, leading to a glacial lake. While the views are not as extensive, this route is easy and suitable for all ages. (p3-p5, average recommendation)
🟡 Medium Route: Hooker Valley Track, a 10-kilometer round trip that takes approximately 3 hours.

This trail offers breathtaking panoramic views of Mount Cook, rivers, and forests. You’ll cross three suspension bridges to reach the serene Hooker Lake at the foot of Mount Cook. If time is limited, you can turn back after reaching the first suspension bridge. (Cover and p6-p7, absolutely beautiful!

Not difficult! Highly recommended! Go for it!)
🔴 Long Route: Muller Hut Route, a challenging 7 to 8-hour round trip with spectacular views of the summit, snow-capped mountains, and glaciers. Due to its high difficulty, it is not recommended for beginners. (Didn’t go! I’ll keep quiet!)

2. Precautions:
1) Upon arriving at the Hooker Valley Track parking lot, you’ll find clear signs indicating the hiking routes, allowing you to choose on-site.
2) The Mount Cook area is a popular destination, so expect a large number of visitors. Parking and restroom facilities can be crowded, and there are no shops within the scenic area.

Be sure to bring enough food and drinking water.
3) Although the temperature may not be extremely low, the wind can be strong. It’s advisable to wear a windbreaker or a light down jacket to stay comfortable.

Mount Cook truly lives up to its reputation as a breathtaking destination. The Hooker Valley Track was as stunning as described, but I wish I had more time to explore it fully. The contrast between the vibrant blue of Lake Pukaki and the snow-capped peaks was absolutely magical.
