If you’re exploring the stunning landscapes of Queenstown and dream of witnessing the breathtaking beauty of Milford Sound, often referred to as the eighth wonder of the world, you have two primary options to consider!
1. You can embark on a self-drive adventure, but be prepared for a long journey. The round trip typically takes over 10 hours, which can be quite exhausting. If you do decide to drive, it’s a good idea to spend the night in Te Anau, making the trip more manageable and less tiring.
2. Alternatively, you can book a day tour from Queenstown to Milford Sound and back through Book Me, choosing the RealNZ boat for an unforgettable experience.
Our day began at 6:40 am when we boarded the bus at the central pick-up point in Queenstown. The check-in process was swift, and we were soon on our way. The journey itself was a visual feast, with the scenic views from the bus window stretching as far as the eye could see. Our knowledgeable driver provided an engaging English commentary, and we made several stops at picturesque spots, allowing us to capture the beauty on camera.
Upon arriving at Milford Sound, we hopped aboard the Marine, a vessel that offered a thrilling ride. The wind was brisk, so it’s advisable to bring extra layers. Despite the sunny weather, the scenery from the boat was somewhat underwhelming, and wildlife sightings were limited to a few seals—no dolphins in sight!
In retrospect, I would suggest avoiding a sunny day for this trip, as the conditions might not showcase Milford Sound in its full glory.
We returned to downtown Queenstown around 7:20 pm, concluding a memorable, if somewhat lengthy, day.
