For those eager to catch a glimpse of the adorable little blue penguins, don’t limit yourself to Oamaru. I recently discovered that Dunedin offers a much more rewarding experience, where you can freely capture photos and videos (just make sure to avoid using flash). The friendly and enthusiastic volunteer guides not only welcome photography but also encourage visitors to share their magical moments with friends and family.

Best of all, the ticket price you pay directly supports the conservation efforts for these charming creatures, helping to create a safer and more comfortable habitat for them.

[薯券R] I booked the tickets on Viator, and it cost 67.16🔪 for two people after the discount. I think it’s super worth it, and the experience was great. You can search for this name to book:
Guided Evening Penguin Viewing Otago Peninsula, Dunedin, New Zealand.
I got an 8.5% discount using a friend’s referral code.

If any sisters want to book, you can message me for the link. I’m not sure if it still works, but you can try; an 8.5% discount is quite good.
[星R] Process:
1. Check-in: You need to arrive 20 minutes early to check in and get a sign with the number of people registered. It’s recommended to leave from Dunedin city early because the road to get there is winding and not easy to drive, so make sure not to be late.

Arriving early also allows you to watch seagulls; I estimate there were thousands of seagulls in the parking lot, like we had disturbed their nest [失望R][汗颜R].
2. Volunteer introduction lasts about 20 minutes, covering the habits of the penguins, Maori stories, and viewing precautions. The volunteer girl was particularly cute, and her explanation was very interesting.

I thought it would be boring, but I learned a lot!
3. Watching the penguins: Volunteers will lead everyone near the penguin nests (we actually stood above their nests). We were divided into two groups, one facing the sea to see them coming ashore from the ocean, and the other standing on the path they must take to return to their nests.

The two groups will switch positions, so listen to the volunteers’ instructions during the process.
4. You can take photos and videos throughout, but do not use flash! I saw a foreigner taking photos with a professional camera and using flash, which was really too much. No one around stopped him, and just as I was about to, he got up and left.

What kind of manners are these? Next time I see him, I’ll definitely report to the volunteers and have him removed [暗中观察R][暗中观察R]. So, we must follow the rules, no flash, and listen to the volunteers!
5. You can stay until the end. A hidden benefit is that, besides chatting with the volunteers, you can see the little penguins running on the road, allowing for super close-up views!

On our way back, we even saw one running onto the main road. Luckily, the car in front braked in time; it was super dangerous. Everyone must drive carefully on the way back and avoid running over the little penguins 🐧.
[紫色心形R] The penguins’ breeding season is roughly from December to February, so you can see the most penguins during this period.

We saw about 120 on the day, so you can choose to come during this time!
