Tongariro Alpine Crossing: Ultimate Guide to the Scenic Tongariro Hike Adventure

This is a rather challenging hiking trail (20 km) with breathtaking scenery along the way. Make sure to prepare well before you set off. We embarked on this adventure at the end of January.

1. Sun protection is absolutely crucial. Apply plenty of sunscreen, and also pay attention to the weather forecast to ensure you stay warm and protected from the elements.

2. Each person should bring at least 2-3 bottles of water and some snacks or light meals to keep your energy levels up throughout the hike.

3. Register in advance on the official website and submit your travel information (there are staff checking at the entrance). 4. Book the shuttle bus in advance online (60 NZD per person plus a small tax). Shuttles run at 6 am, 7 am, 8 am, and 9 am. Since there is no parking at the entrance, most hikers drive to a parking lot near the endpoint and then take the shuttle to the starting point. I booked the National Park Shuttle (website: https://nationalparkshuttles.

com/), and there are other shuttle services available as well. The Tongariro Crossing car park is about 2 km from the endpoint (you can find it on Gaode Maps). It’s located on the side of Highway 46, clearly marked with signs. There are staff at the parking lot; just show them your booking. We stayed at a cozy homestay in Turangi the night before, and there is a New World supermarket nearby where you can stock up on supplies.

It takes about 20 minutes to drive to the parking lot from there. At the time, Highway 1 was under construction, and Gaode Maps did not reflect this, so I recommend using Google Maps to check the route and avoid missing the bus.

5. The beginning of the hiking trail is relatively easy, but the uphill and downhill sections later on can be more challenging. It’s highly recommended to bring trekking poles and be cautious of slippery surfaces. We had a few slips and slides ourselves, so be prepared!

6. There are only about four or five toilets along the way, and they are quite far apart. Plan your breaks accordingly.

7. The scenery along the way is truly spectacular, featuring small waterfalls, majestic volcanoes, geothermal areas, lush forests, refreshing springs, and serene lakes. Every step offers a new and stunning view.
