Who Could Resist the Irresistible Salmon from Mount Cook Alps?
This salmon enthusiast was brimming with excitement before the trip, eagerly anticipating today’s salmon tasting tour [Shy R]. The experience turned out to be incredibly satisfying. We visited two remarkable salmon farms, and I can’t wait to share the details of both.

1. High Country Salmon
High Country Salmon is a haven for seafood lovers, offering a diverse array of salmon preparations, from sashimi and sushi to various cooked dishes. You can even buy feed to interact with the salmon and participate in a fun and affordable fishing activity, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely lunch. The sashimi here is exceptionally creamy and rich in fat (p3, 6), and their eggs benedict (p4) are a must-try—absolutely delicious!

2. Mt Cook Alpine Salmon Shop
Nestled by the picturesque Lake Pukaki, this charming salmon shop offers a unique dining experience where you can savor your meal while enjoying the breathtaking views. The popular glasshouse photo spot adds a touch of charm (p5).
The shop has a more focused menu, featuring sashimi, cooked salmon, and roe.

We indulged in two boxes of salmon (p1) and one box of roe (p7). The salmon here is fresh and sweet, with a light, non-greasy flavor that felt wonderfully novel and delightful. The roe, in particular, is a standout; it’s the best I’ve ever tasted! Each grain is plump and free from any fishy odor, and one person could easily polish off a whole box!

When the staff asks which type of roe you prefer, be sure to choose ikura—it’s perfectly balanced in saltiness and incredibly delicious!
Oh, how I wish I could return every day!

The Mount Cook Alpine salmon sounds incredible! I had no idea New Zealand produced such high-quality fish. Have you tried cooking it with any unique recipes? I’d love to hear what pairs well with this salmon.
Thank you for your interest! While I haven’t personally tried cooking it, many people rave about simply searing the salmon and serving it with a squeeze of lemon—it really lets the natural flavors shine. If you’re feeling adventurous, pairing it with a white wine like Sauvignon Blanc is a classic choice. Thanks for asking—let me know if you discover a fantastic recipe!
