Why You Should Rethink Visiting Dunedin from Queenstown This Year
Unless… you absolutely adore nature‼

There are numerous routes from Queenstown to Dunedin, and I chose Highway 8 through Cromwell, then switched to Highway 1 🛣️. I made a point to stop at every lookout point or large parking area along the way, savoring the breathtaking views and turning what should have been a 3 hour 40 minute drive into over 5 hours [Crying with laughter][Crying with laughter].

But it was worth every moment, as I managed to capture the stunning photos from Pic 1️⃣ to Pic 10️⃣ (and there were even more that didn’t make the cut…).

Before checking into the homestay, I first visited Tunnel Beach in Pic 1, New Zealand’s very own ‘White Cliffs,’ which somewhat eased my regret from missing out on the real ones in the UK 🇬🇧. Then, I explored Sandfly Bay Wildlife Reserve, where I witnessed the dramatic crashing waves and spotted wild sea lions 🦭‼

Tips[One]: The seaside wind can be fierce, whipping up sand. If you plan to visit these two spots, wear sturdy hiking shoes and bundle up 🥶.

Tips[Two]: Wild sea lions can be quite intimidating, especially when they roar and charge… so keep a safe distance‼ They often blend in with the black rocks, so tread carefully to avoid any unexpected encounters…

Tips[Three]: The view at Tunnel Beach becomes less impressive the further down you go, and the climb back up is quite strenuous. You can get a good look from a distance and just explore a few bends.

Finally, my personal top recommendation [Raising hand] is the Dunedin homestay! Search for “Scandinavian-style modern rural barn getaway” on Airbnb, hosted by Mandy.

I’ve never stayed in such a cozy and charming room in New Zealand!! This standalone loft boasts huge floor-to-ceiling windows, two oversized sofas, all the amenities, and a wonderfully scented body wash 🧼. The skylight opens right up to the stars, offering a magical night sky experience‼ Mandy not only provided bread, eggs, chips, and fruit but also some thoughtful extras like napkins [Crying with laughter], sanitary pads, sun umbrellas, rain umbrellas, and flashlights 🔦.
There’s a picturesque lakeside path down the hill, perfect for an evening stroll to catch the sunset 🌇.
In the morning, you step out to a vast expanse of greenery, flowers, and a serene lake, with the distant bleating of sheep and lambs 🐑 and the sight of horses and cows 🐄. However, the room is exceptionally soundproof, ensuring a peaceful night’s sleep.
Being about a 7-minute drive from the city center, the area has minimal light pollution, making it an ideal spot for stargazing. Standing on the grass in front of the house, we saw the most stars of our entire trip 💫, and Stella even spotted a shooting star 🌠.
Dunedin, with its British charm, has a unique feel, though the attractions here aren’t necessarily must-sees… Btw‼ The Cookie Time here offers far fewer varieties than in Queenstown, so if you’re looking for souvenirs, be aware ⚠.
Because the homestay was so perfect, we spent most of our time indoors, enjoying the tranquility and comfort [Smiling].
If, like me, you’re just passing through Dunedin, I wholeheartedly recommend this homestay for an utterly relaxing experience [Kissing]. The serene atmosphere and warm hospitality make it the perfect haven to unwind and recharge.
That sounds like my kind of road trip! I love how you took the time to enjoy all those lookout points—sometimes the journey is way more memorable than the destination itself. I wonder if there are any hidden gems between Cromwell and Dunedin that you discovered?
Absolutely, there are some hidden gems! I stumbled upon a quaint little café near Clyde with the most delicious local produce. Further down the road, there’s a scenic bike trail in Ranfurly that’s worth exploring if you’re into peaceful rides. Thanks for your comment—it’s always great to hear from fellow road trip enthusiasts!
