Discover Lake Toba: World’s Largest Volcanic Lake and Breathtaking Tourist Photo Spot

Lake Toba, a breathtaking volcanic lake nestled in the northern part of Sumatra Island, Indonesia, on the Mada Plateau, is not only the largest freshwater lake in Indonesia but also holds the title of the world’s largest volcanic lake.

[1R] Embark on a scenic 45-minute flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kualanamu Airport in Medan, where you can enjoy stunning views of the Strait of Malacca from above.
[2R] Upon arrival at the airport, opt for an airport bus or hire a car. We chose a spacious seven-seater with a Chinese-speaking driver, which cost RMB600 (365 horse coins) per day for four people, making it a cost-effective option when shared.

Additionally, budget around RMB90 (57 horse coins) for round-trip tolls and ferry fees (the car must board the ferry, approximately RMB220 or 135 horse coins). Ensure there’s ample space in the back for luggage. Note that low-cost hired cars and buses do not venture to the volcano 🌋.
[3R] The journey to the Parapat dock of Lake Toba takes about 4 hours.

Your driver will guide both the car and passengers by ferry (the car must board the ferry) to the enchanting Samosir Island, also known as Xiamengshi Island, for a day of exploration.
[4R] Once on the island, public transportation is scarce, so consider renting a motorcycle, though a license may be required.
