Discover the Best Hiking Trails in the Heart of the North Atlantic
Until the moment the John Paul II Airport announced boarding, a sense of disbelief still lingered. I was about to fly to an enchanting island in the heart of the North Atlantic, a place that, while geographically European, sits on the North American tectonic plate. The Azores, a vital supply station on the historic Atlantic route linking Europe and America, is a living testament to the Age of Discovery, where every corner whispers tales of adventure and exploration.

Although I couldn’t visit Corvo, the island known for its unique terrain and tiny population, Flores, just 20 kilometers away, proved to be a breathtaking alternative. During the summer months of July and August, daily ferries connect these two islands, offering thrilling boat trips. If you’re fortunate, you might catch a glimpse of dolphins and majestic blue whales breaching the endless horizon, a sight that leaves an indelible mark on your soul.

Thanks to Francisco, my guide from Experience Oc, my journey on this relatively undeveloped island was nothing short of extraordinary. More than just a guide, Francisco was a true botanist at heart. As I marveled at the natural wonders I had never seen before, he shared his intimate knowledge of every plant and leaf, bringing the island’s flora to life with his passion and expertise.

In the end, Francisco went above and beyond by helping me arrange transportation from my accommodation to the airport. I wholeheartedly recommend that anyone visiting Flores should seek out his services. When we said our goodbyes, he asked when I would return to Flores, and I confidently replied, “Definitely in the summer.” He playfully remarked that he might not remember me then, to which I half-jokingly responded, “You recognize everything, including me.”
