What an incredible moment—I finally came face-to-face with the extraordinary Dendrosenecio kilimanjari, those towering giants that signal our steady ascent! Contrary to their tree-like appearance, these remarkable plants are actually massive herbs from the sunflower family, thriving exclusively between 3,600 and 4,300 meters. They perfectly illustrate the mountaineer’s wisdom: “The higher you climb, the further you see!”
After navigating countless ridges and valleys, we’ve reached our current haven—Karanga Camp, perched dramatically at 4,000 meters. The crisp mountain air fills our lungs as we take in breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
The “climb high, sleep low” approach proves its brilliance daily, allowing our bodies to gradually adapt to the thinning air. Our vigilant medical team conducts thorough check-ups twice daily—my blood oxygen holding steady at a healthy 85, keeping me in prime condition for the challenges ahead.
The adventure continues tomorrow as we push toward Barafu Camp at 4,600 meters, the final staging ground before our ultimate test—the summit assault! Every step brings us closer to standing atop Africa’s rooftop.
