Discover the Ultimate 14th African Safari Adventure: Unmissable Experiences Await
The wildebeest crossing, often referred to as the “Crossing of the Heavenly River,” is a breathtaking highlight of the great migration! Even during the peak season from July to September, when the wildebeests traverse the Mara River, witnessing this natural spectacle demands both patience and a bit of luck.

The Mara River boasts 10 crossing points, scattered over several kilometers of riverbank. However, predicting where and when the herds will cross is an unpredictable and random affair, making it a true test of endurance. Some visitors wait for days without seeing a single crossing, often spending hours crouched in anticipation.

As soon as a large group of wildebeests begins to gather on the bank, dozens of safari vehicles rush to the scene, positioning themselves about one or two hundred meters away from the main herd. The moment the crossing begins, guides floor the gas pedal, racing to the shore to secure the best vantage point for their guests.

The adrenaline rush is unmatched! To increase our chances of witnessing a crossing, I booked a four-night stay at Nimali, but I never imagined we would see two crossings the very morning after our arrival! Our luck was extraordinary; the first time (Figures 1-5), we waited just 15 minutes at Crossing Point 0, and then, only ten minutes later, we witnessed the second crossing between Points 0 and 1 (Figures 6-9).

Although neither of these were the massive herds of tens of thousands, watching five to six thousand wildebeests cross in front of us was nothing short of spectacular.

Adding to the drama, the crocodiles in the river seized the opportunity to attack the wildebeests (Figures 8-9), creating a heart-stopping scene that felt like a live BBC documentary. It was a truly unforgettable experience, filled with the raw power and beauty of nature.
