Masai Mara is a destination that truly deserves a few extra days of exploration. One of the most unique experiences here is the opportunity to walk along the banks of the Mara River, an area typically off-limits. With a small tip to the local guards, they will escort you with their rifles, ensuring a safe and thrilling adventure.

The sensation of treading the same ground as the wild animals is nothing short of exhilarating. Even though it wasn’t the migration season, we were still treated to the sight of hippos and crocodiles lounging in the sun by the river, which was a fantastic consolation.

Our stay at the Girlock Lodge was equally memorable. A quaint path connects the lodge to the Hippo Bar 🦛, where you can sip on a refreshing drink 🍻 while watching the wildlife. The bar offers a front-row seat to a natural spectacle, with numerous hippos wallowing in the mud (be prepared for a strong, earthy aroma) and a variety of other herbivores grazing nearby. If you’re staying at this lodge, a visit to the Hippo Bar is an absolute must!
