This channel is located at the beginning of the Mara River, with steep terrain and a more open landscape. Compared to other channels, tourists can experience the wildebeest herds from a wider angle.

1

Safari vehicles can only watch the migration from the Tanzanian Lemai side of this channel. It cannot be viewed from both sides, which means this place might get a bit crowded.

The crossing here is very dangerous as crocodiles attack in deeper waters.

2

A broader view can be enjoyed on this channel. There is no elevation, and although not as steep as other crossings, it is said that there are about 40 to 50 crocodiles here. When the crocodile groups navigate through the dangerous waters, it offers an engaging experience.

3

Much wider than other river mouths. The wildebeest herds must wade through huge waves and strong currents at this crossing.

It is often possible to see thousands of wildebeests united, resisting the strong current, especially after heavy rains. It is exciting to see how they manage the tides and waves.

4

Visibility at the crossing point may be quite limited, and it can only be viewed from the north bank of the Mara River. Sometimes they cross the river multiple times, moving in a circle, which can cause confusion.

5

Due to the abundance of rocks and strong currents, the 5th river crossing is one of the most difficult for the wildebeests.

6

It is important to note the impact of flooding on this particular river crossing. There is a small bridge at the 6th channel, allowing access from the south to the north side of the Mara River. Due to flooding, access may be restricted.

7A and 7B

A rocky stream separates these two crossings. The allowed distances also differ; safari vehicles need to maintain a distance of 50 meters at the 7B crossing and 40 meters at the 7A crossing.

With many crocodiles present, wildebeests usually rely on the large herd for safety when crossing, but undoubtedly, some will become prey to these powerful predators during the crossing.

Makutano Crossing

This is one of the most significant river crossings where wildebeest herds cross in groups, with each crossing lasting up to 5 hours. The viewing distance from the south side must not exceed 60 meters. Fortunately, the terrain here is quite open, making it easier for vehicles to find the best viewing spots.

8

During the peak season of 2023, nearly 100,000 wildebeests were seen crossing the Mara River. Viewing is limited to the south side, with safari vehicles restricted to within 30 meters of the wildebeest herds.

9

Like the 8th river crossing, this crossing is located further north along the Mara River. Similar to the 7th and 8th river crossings, you can experience the sight of wildebeest herds crossing together, with each crossing lasting several hours.

10

It is often remarked that the gentle slope of the 10th river crossing makes it one of the most manageable for wildebeests, providing a safer and more accessible route for these magnificent creatures. Spectators can enjoy this natural spectacle from the north bank of the river, which is easily reached from the south via a convenient bridge.
