Before going on a safari in Amboseli, I did some research and found that the main differences between different travel agencies and packages boil down to two key points: accommodation and guides.

The platform we mainly used for our research was www.safaribookings.com. It provides price references, past reviews, and itineraries for customized tours.

About Accommodation:
You can get a rough idea of the accommodation conditions by looking at photos and ratings on Google Maps, which gives you an expectation and a sense of the price. If your budget allows, you can opt for a better accommodation package.

About Guides:
The core role of a guide is to be both the driver and the safari leader. The guide can significantly impact the experience. Although the safari process feels quite “standardized,” such as one trip at 4 pm and another at 6:30 am, the guide’s experience in finding animals and their storytelling skills are also important.

If you encounter a normal guide, the trip might just be standard without any particular highlights. If you find a very good guide, it can feel like a stroke of luck. Everyone has different expectations and requirements for guides, so it’s best to communicate with the travel agency. For example, you can request a guide with a certain number of years of experience or someone who is very sociable.

If you place a high value on the guide, it’s recommended to call each guide and get a feel for their personality.

About Duration:
We booked a two-day, one-night safari in Amboseli for two people. The best time to see the most animals is definitely the early morning trip. If you don’t have a strong desire to see specific animals, two days and one night should be sufficient, as it can be quite tiring to be in the car all the time.

About Wildlife: Elephants
, zebras
, and gazelles are guaranteed sightings, while other animals depend on luck.
About What to Bring:
Masks are very important during the safari due to the significant amount of dust; even the guides cover their mouths and noses.
Other personal items include a jacket for the cooler evenings, insect repellent, and sunscreen.
