Top Things to Do in Arusha After Your Safari: Must-See Attractions & Hidden Gems
My Tanzanian safari adventure began and ended in Arusha, where I intentionally carved out half a day to uncover the city’s hidden treasures. Through a lucky Google search for African drumming workshops, I stumbled upon this cultural oasis—so well-hidden that even my local guide hadn’t heard of it. The moment we arrived, we knew we’d discovered something special, and my guide immediately added it to his list of must-see recommendations for future travelers.

At the heart of this vibrant center stands an American visionary who arrived decades ago, established the university’s music department, and later transformed his passion into this thriving cultural hub. Today, it serves as both a creative sanctuary for music students and a performance venue that pulses with African rhythms.

The compact campus features several uniquely designed buildings—including a performance hall, rehearsal spaces, administrative offices, an exhibition gallery, and a music library—all architecturally inspired by traditional African instruments, with drum-shaped structures that make the complex itself sing.

We immersed ourselves in the experience with a drumming-dancing workshop and cultural tour. Our enthusiastic instructor led us to an Aladdin’s cave of musical wonders—rows of authentic African drums, melodic marimbas, and exotic instruments we couldn’t even name. After a thrilling hands-on session where we created spontaneous rhythms together, we moved to the dance floor for an unforgettable lesson in movement and music.

As fate would have it, our visit coincided with a lively local event. The courtyard buzzed with energy as guests mingled under billowing white tents near the performance center. The air carried mouthwatering aromas from the open-fire kitchen where chefs roasted an entire goat, while laughter and clinking glasses created a symphony of celebration.
