Avoid Common Travel Pitfalls in Nha Trang: Insider Tips for a Smooth Trip

My partner and I embarked on our journey to Nha Trang from Xiaoshan Airport on April 30th. We opted for a self-guided tour priced at 5k per person, which included two days with a group and two days of free time. The overall experience was fantastic, but we did encounter several challenges. I’m sharing these insights to help others avoid similar pitfalls.

1. Avoid giving tips at customs. Vietnam is not a tipping culture; they only ask for tips from Chinese travelers. This time, neither my partner nor I gave any tips, and we were not delayed. While not tipping might cause a slight delay, it’s better than being taken advantage of.
2. Refrain from exchanging money at the airport or with the tour guide (unless the exchange rate is exceptionally good or in an emergency).

We went to a gold shop in the city center and got a favorable rate of 1:3490.
3. Steer clear of overpriced taxis. It’s highly recommended to use Grab, as you won’t be overcharged, and you can also order food through the app.
4. Be cautious about eating at random seafood restaurants on the street, as it’s easy to get overcharged.

We found a restaurant that many people on Little Red Book raved about. The owner was very friendly, helped us cut the seafood, offered complimentary fruit, and the prices were reasonable. However, to be honest, the taste was just average (perhaps because I’m from Ningbo and prefer the flavors of home).

I won’t mention the name of the restaurant to avoid it seeming like an advertisement, but feel free to message me privately if you’d like to know.
5. On the last day, the tour guide asked us for a tip. We consulted our Vietnamese friends, who informed us that there is no such custom; it’s merely a way to take advantage of Chinese tourists.

The guide collected tips from everyone on the bus on the way to the airport. When it was our turn, we firmly said no, and we were the only two who didn’t give a tip. The guide couldn’t do anything about it and remained silent. However, if many people refuse to give a tip, the guide might refuse to take you.

I was prepared to take a taxi to the airport and file a complaint if necessary.
6. The local unit for measuring fruit is kg, which is equivalent to two jin. Make sure to ask clearly when buying to avoid being overcharged. You can haggle for the price of fruits sold on the street.
7. For self-guided tours, avoid additional trips suggested by the guide.

They are not cheaper and often more expensive. On the third day, which was a free day, the guide suggested going to Vinpearl Island for 380 per person. We bought tickets online for 268 per person, including a buffet, which totaled only 365.
