Discover Ha Long Bay: Explore the Mystical Karst Peaks of Vietnam
Ha Long Bay, a stunning gem nestled on the northeastern coast of Vietnam, is home to the world’s largest marine karst landscape. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, it is often referred to as the “Guilin on the Sea” by locals. Just 165 kilometers from Hanoi, I opted for a one-day group tour, considering the cost of round-trip transportation.

Along the way, I had the delightful company of a Japanese girl, and we had a blast taking photos and checking in at various spots [Laughing R].

⛵️ Tour Route
1️⃣ Bus assembly, departure at 9:00 (2.5-hour journey)
2️⃣ Visit to the pearl factory (no compulsory shopping)
3️⃣ Ha Long Bay cruise (ticket price 290k VND per person)
4️⃣ Lunch on the cruise
5️⃣ Luon Cave kayaking/slow boat – 40 minutes
Kayaking through the caves was an exhilarating experience!

Weaving through the intricate passages, it’s a more physically engaging activity compared to the leisurely slow boat.
6️⃣ Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave) tour – 1 hour
This is the largest known stalactite cave in Ha Long Bay, featuring a vast and awe-inspiring terrain that leaves visitors in wonder.
7️⃣ Titop Island (Hero Island) tour – 1 hour
The island features a monument to Ho Chi Minh, with options to hike to the top for a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view or relax on the beach.

The view from the top is truly unforgettable.
8️⃣ Sunset party (including drinks and snacks) – 1 hour
Indian tourists took over the dance floor, grooving to a variety of music. Sitting on the deck, we were mesmerized by the magnificent and dynamic sunset over the sea.
9️⃣ Return by bus, arriving in Hanoi at 21:00

⛵️ Booking Guide
1️⃣ Price of a one-day tour
Hotel travel agencies tend to be pricier. After some negotiation with a local travel agency, I booked the tour (Tour Ninh Binh hang ngay) for $36. You can also book it on the Klook app for around 200-300 RMB.
2️⃣ Value for money
The attractions are spread across different islands, requiring boat rides to reach them.

During peak tourist seasons, the crowds can affect the experience. However, from morning till night, apart from self-funded drinks and snacks, there are no additional expenses, making it a great value for money.
3️⃣ Benefits of joining a group: International friendships
One of the best parts of a group tour is the opportunity to meet friends from all over the world.

This time, I had a fantastic time with Japanese and Korean tourists, and we enjoyed taking photos and checking in at various spots. It’s a great way to make up for the less-than-stellar group meals =-=
4️⃣ Special experiences
Ha Long Bay is dotted with numerous karst islands. If you have the time, consider booking a two-day tour.

At night, you can kayak to see the bioluminescent plankton, and in the early morning, witness the mystical mist over the sea, creating a truly magical experience.
⛵️ Other Matters
1️⃣ Cruise Ticket Sales
When planning your Ha Long Bay adventure, the ticket center offers a variety of options to suit your needs. You can choose from a simple cruise-only ticket or opt for a more comprehensive package that includes stops at various enchanting islands, allowing you to explore each one at your leisure. Additionally, there are individual and combo tickets available for specific attractions, giving you the flexibility to tailor your experience.
2️⃣ Best Season to Visit
The dry season, spanning from November to April, is the peak time to visit Ha Long Bay. During these months, the weather is ideal for an array of yacht and boating activities, making it a favorite among travelers. Conversely, the rainy season from May to October brings heavy rainfall and a more humid climate, which can limit some outdoor activities.
However, this period also offers more budget-friendly prices, making it a great option for those looking to save while still enjoying the bay’s natural beauty.
3️⃣ Preparations
To ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip, it’s essential to come prepared. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun’s rays. Additionally, make sure to waterproof your valuables, as you’re likely to get wet—especially if you plan on kayaking. Your backpack and other items should be well-protected to keep them dry and safe throughout your adventure.
